Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is an eclectic and vibrant neighborhood three blocks east of downtown Dallas. This renovated warehouse district is home to New York City style lofts, unique shopping, creative dining, a lively nightclub and bar scene, live music and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

A decade ago, Deep Ellum pulsed from dusk to dawn with a popular (and very loud) clubbing scene. However, changes to zoning laws in recent years have toned down the party a bit.

Thanks to an increase in residential housing and shops, Deep Ellum is quieter and safer, and while it’s left its wild youth behind, the neighborhood is still a popular destination for young crowds to relax over cheap beers, listen to live music and dance the night away.

A decade plus of urban renewal has breathed new life into the former warehouse district, turning it into a funky shopping destination. Shoppers searching for a unique gift or an out-of-the-ordinary souvenir to remember your visit to the Big D will not be disappointed.

There are no chain stores in Deep Ellum, only vibrant boutiques showcasing a blend of new and vintage. From home furnishings and clothing to second-hand books and southwestern arts and crafts, with a little patience you can find the perfect gift tucked away in one of the many stores.

If you’re looking for a fun night out (or a break from the Highland Park and Uptown bars), Deep Ellum is a great destination for a complete change of scene.

To kick off your weekend, visit the Double Wide Bar, located at 3510 Commerce St. As its name suggests, decor trends towards trailer park chic, and the live music and cheap cold beer make this a favorite place to relax. Get started with the Happy Hour Special (5-8pm, Monday to Friday) that features $2 domestics and well drinks. The dark interior of the main bar is small and intimate, and there’s an attached venue for your live music needs.

To hear the best local bands play, be sure to check out Liquid Lounge (2800 Main Street). It’s a tiny lounge/bar space (the little sister of the bigger and more famous Curtain Club) but if you can wade through the wannabe rock stars crowding the stage, you’ll be in for some great local music.

Just down the road at 2726 Commerce Street is Angry Dog, the perfect place to grab a burger and a cold one. It’s dark, a little dirty and your quintessential dive bar that serves greasy food. Craving some post-drinking snacks? Forget about your diet and dig into the famous chili cheese dog. You’ll thank yourself in the morning.

If you want to dance the night away, check out eXcuses eXtreme Café (3025 Main St). It occupies the building that once housed legendary local hotspot “Club One.” Mild mannered art-house cafe by day and dance club at night, beware the drinks. They’re strong and inexpensive, and just a few will have you showing off your Thriller moves in no time.

While you’re down in Deep Ellum, be sure to check out all the graffiti art covering buildings, highway overpasses and the Good Latimer Street Bridge. Since the early 2000’s, Deep Ellum has been a favorite destination for graffiti artists who cover the district with an ever-changing collection of art.

To reach Deep Ellum by public transport, take the DART downtown, and then a short, $5 cab ride to your destination of choice on Commerce Street or Main Street. You can also drive, but parking can get scarce on the weekends, so be prepared to circle the block in search of spaces.
